In this month's blog, Anna King, Commercial Director at the Health Innovation Network South London, reflects on our recent roundtable which brought together a range of stakeholders to discuss the scaling up of digital mental health technologies in the NHS and the challenges to overcome.

We recently held a roundtable discussion on the commercialisation of Digital Mental Health Solutions (including XR), chaired by Julian David, OBE, Chief Executive Officer of techUK.

The aim for this meeting was to capture expert opinion on how companies focused on digital (including XR solutions) for mental health can achieve rapid growth, significant market penetration and sustainability. 

The message from the roundtable discussion was clear: the ‘playbook’ exists for scaling up of digital mental health solutions, but various factors including procurement, regulatory processes, investment, and workforce factors, among other things, need to be addressed to fully support the scaling up of these bolder solutions.

We were delighted to hear that Mindset company CrossSense has been awarded the £1 million Longitude Prize on Dementia for their smart glasses which are paired with an AI-powered app and designed to help people living with early-to-mid stage dementia maintain their independence. 

There was also great news for another Mindset company, Cineon, who were named 

one of Jet2’s 2025 Supplier Award winners for TACET Walkaround, a virtual reality training device that enables pilots to complete realistic pre-flight inspections in a safe virtual environment.

National HealthTech Access Programme (NHAP) launched

The new National Healthtech Access Programme (previously called the Rules Based Pathway) is a collaborative approach between NICE, the Department of Health and Social Care, NHS England, MHRA and the Office for Life Sciences, which will expand NICE’s Technology Appraisals programme to incorporate health technologies.

The new programme forms part of a strategic open innovation approach to HealthTech set out in the 10 Year Health Plan to create a far better experience for patients and NHS professionals, and unlock the extraordinary potential of HealthTech advances and the UK’s HealthTech sector.

NHS England's Digital Technology Assessment Criteria (DTAC) guidance updated

DTAC brings together standards and policies that digital health products must meet to be used in the NHS.

Following consultation with industry, NHS England has revised its approach to assuring technology to make it simpler and less demanding for both industry and NHS bodies.

A new streamlined form is now available which must be used in place of the old form from April. There is also refreshed guidance for buyers and suppliers.

Scotland's Games Action Plan published

Scotland is seeking to unlock the enormous potential of games and games technology in the country, and make the sector a national priority as part of its mission to drive innovation and sustainable growth.

Following two years of consultation and data-led research, the Scottish Games Network has published an Action Plan which sets out the vision for Scotland’s future as a global pioneer in the ‘createch’ economy.
